Elon’s Asher, Ramirez Pick Up CAA Women’s Lacrosse Weekly Honors

RICHMOND, Va. – The first Colonial Athletic Association women’s lacrosse weekly awards of the 2016 season were announced today, Feb. 16, with Elon’s Stephanie Asher being named the CAA Player of the Week and Rachel Ramirez earning CAA Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Asher led Elon to a 2-0 start after recording eight goals and two assists for a total of 10 points in two games last week. The sophomore took 21 total shots, 18 of which were on goal, to finish with an 85.7 shot-on-goal percentage. The Glenelg, Md., native also picked up six ground balls, won four draw controls and had one caused turnover. In the team’s 11-7 season-opening win over San Diego State, Asher notched two goals along with two ground balls, four draw controls and one caused turnover. She led the Phoenix to a 15-8 victory against Longwood with six goals, which matched her career high, to go along with two assists for eight points in the game (one shy of her career high). She picked up four more ground balls and claimed one draw against the Lancers.

Ramirez tallied two wins between the pipes for the Phoenix in the wins over SDSU and Longwood. The junior played all 120 minutes in goal for Elon, tallying 11 saves on 31 shots faced to post a 42.3 save percentage. Ramirez led the team with nine ground balls and four caused turnovers. Against SDSU, she posted four saves on 12 shots by the Aztecs for a 36.4 save percentage along with five ground balls and one caused turnover. Against Longwood, she tallied seven saves off the Lancers’ 19 shots for a 46.7 save mark with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Elon continues play this Friday, Feb. 19, with its first road game of the season at Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C., at 3 p.m.
