Emotions Run High As Pride Men Top Ferrum On Senior Night

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Simeon Howard led Greensboro College with 18 points and seven rebounds, and Donavan Griffith tied a school record with seven blocks, as the Pride defeated the Ferrum College Panthers Wednesday in men’s basketball, 72-57.

Greensboro (15-9, 9-4 USA South) raced out to a 16-2 lead. Parris Scales recorded nine of his 18 points during the run, while Trevin Miller tallied five points. David Leaman also recorded one basket.

Ferrum (12-12, 7-6 USA South) then used a 10-0 run to pull within 16-12.

The Pride answered with a 12-4 run to extend its margin to 28-16 with eight minutes left in the half. Christopher Corbin sank a pair of free throws to start the spurt before Donavan Griffith and Scales electrified the capacity crowd with back-to-back dunks.

Greensboro continued its momentum as Simeon Howard hit a jumper just before halftime to give the Pride a 41-29 lead.

The two teams traded baskets early in the second half before the Panthers pulled within 53-47 with 10:25 left.

Following a Ferrum foul in the final minute, seniors Miller, Leaman, Scales, and Howard exited Mayo C. Harlow Memorial Court for the final time to a standing ovation from the Pride faithful.

Torrence Outing then connected on two free throws to help secure the 15-point victory.

“I am really happy with the way that our team played tonight,” Head Bryan Galuski said. “I am even more excited for our seniors to go away from here with a win.

“We were able to feed off the emotions of the Senior Day festivities at the beginning, before playing a strong second half.”

Howard finished with a team-high 26 points and seven rebounds. Scales also pulled down seven boards.

Men’s Lacrosse Suffers Loss To Hampden-Sydney

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Jonathon Avedesian recorded a team-high three goals, but the Pride men’s lacrosse team could not overcome Hampden-Sydney, falling 15-8 Wednesday.

Avedesian gave the Pride (1-1) a 1-0 lead just one minute into the contest off an assist by Jervon Speller.

The Tigers (2-1) then answered with three goals to take a two-goal lead before Avedesian struck for a second time, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

However, Hampden-Sydney then ran off four straight goals to lead 7-2.

Gianni Gonzalez scored his first goal of the afternoon to make the score 7-3 at halftime.

Tamarie Sterling tallied a goal with 13 minutes left in the third period before Gonzalez tallied his second and final goal of the afternoon off an assist from Austin Bane, pulling Greensboro to within 7-5.

The Tigers then scored the game’s next eight goals to take a 15-5 lead before the Pride scored the final three goals of the afternoon. Charles Stringfellow, Victor Mehrtens, and Avedesian accounted for the goals.

Lamar Jelks picked up a team-high four ground balls, while Gonzalez recorded three.

Ethan Danser took the loss despite making 11 saves.

Pride Women Stumble In Home Finale Against Ferrum

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Alyssa Carbone scored a team-high 12 points, but the Pride women could not overcome a slow start Wednesday, falling to Ferrum College, 65-42.

The Panthers (12-11, 10-4 USA South) raced out to an 18-2 lead in the first period.

Greensboro (13-9, 9-4 USA South) used a 6-0 run in the second to pull within 38-21 before going into halftime down 52-31.

In the second half, the Pride could pull no closer than within 18 points.

Kamerin Williams recorded eight points and a team-high six rebounds, while Monica Smalls chipped in seven points. Bryanna Stanton finished with six points.

Krista Cox paced Ferrum with a game-high 15 points.
