Pride Wrestler Kacee Hutchinson Trains At Olympic Training Center

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College wrestler Kacee Hutchinson had an opportunity of a lifetime as he trained with Greco World Team member Joe Rau at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. We asked him questions about this experience.

How did this opportunity happen?

This past summer I went to a clinic that was being run by 2014 Greco World Team member Joe Rau. We hit it off and exchanged numbers. He is training for the Pan Am Games, which is a tournament of all of North and Central America, and he asked me to come be one of his training partners.

Whom are you training with?

I’ve got the opportunity to work with a lot of really talented guys, especially some who are older and more experienced. I worked a lot with Jake Clark, who was a world team member in 2006 and 2010, and he has mentored me and helped a lot. I also wrested with Robbie Smith, who was fifth in the world at heavyweight, Joe Rau, and Tracy Hancock, who was a Junior World Team member. There is definitely not a lack of talent and training partners here.

What was a typical day for you at the OTC?

We had two workouts most days. Mondays and Thursdays are our tough training days. We warmed up for about 15-20 minutes before live wrestling for about an hour and a half before a little bit of conditioning at the end. Doing that twice a day can be tough. Tuesdays and Fridays, we do a technique session in the morning, where everybody just works on what they need to, before lifting in the afternoon. Wednesday we did a circuit in the wrestling room. Saturday was a tournament simulation day for the people competing at Pan Ams.

What are the dorms like?

They’re your pretty standard dorms. The have a TV, which is nice, and comfortable beds. They have a lobby on each floor that has some sort of game table and a big TV and couches.

Describe the dining hall and relate it to your training:

The dinner hall had some pretty great food there. They have a lot of healthy options every day. They have an omelet bar and oatmeal bar in the mornings, and for lunch and dinner, they have a pasta bar and usually some sort of fish and either chicken, steak or pork. Being able to fuel my body with good foods and healthy stuff is definitely important to my having good training sessions…

What do you plan to take away from this experience?

I knew I was not going be the best person in the room by any extent, but I really wanted to soak up as much as I could. I have picked up many great wrestling techniques, but I have also learned a lot about how people train, how people think, how people eat, and how people coach. All these things have helped me grow as a wrestler and as an athlete in general.

What are your goals upon returning to GC?

Right when I get back the team has the Regional Tournament, so I want to help get them as ready as possible. For myself, I want to qualify for the Olympic Trials; I want to make the University World Team in Greco, and next year, I want to be a national champion, nothing less.
