College Men’s Tennis Final – Randolph-Macon 7, Guilford 2

ASHLAND ,Va. – Host Randolph-Macon College claimed a hard-fought 7-2 men’s victory over visiting Guilford College Saturday in the Quakers’ Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener.

Each of the three doubles matches were determined by three or fewer points. The Yellow Jackets’ second-doubles tandem of Tom Lewis and Alex Cumow took a 9-7 win over Guilford’s Chasen Chacon and Graham Pearson. Jacob Haines and Pablo Bordas edged the Quakers’ Levi Bruff and Mason Church, 8-6, at third doubles.

Most of the singles matches were also tight. Randolph-Macon’s John Adam beat Erik Meiler at first singles, 7-6, 6-4. The Yellow Jackets’ Baxter Carter had a close win over Aaron Smedley at fourth singles, 6-3, 7-6. Cumrow topped Bruff at fifth singles, 6-3, 7-5.

Guilford’s Mesa Martorell scored with a 6-4, 6-1, win at third singles. Teammate John Brvenik won the sixth-singles match with Stuart McCloskey, 7-6, 3-6, 1-0.

Coach Dave McCain’s Quakers (0-4, 0-1 ODAC) head to Virginia Wesleyan College Sunday for another league match.
