*****Was reading over at the High School Xtra site at the N&R with Joe Sirera and read between the lines and picked up this news and it could be BIG, I mean real BIG…We knew Coach Joyner would no longer teach and coach volleyball at NWG after this May 1st, but now this too:
Joyner said she hasn’t decided whether she will continue to coach Northwest’s girls basketball team, but at this time she doesn’t expect to return to the NCHSAA Class 4-A finalists.*****

+++++If Coach Joyner is GONE, that will be the end of an ERA at Northwest Guilford High School….She won something like 16 straight conference titles in Volleyball, finished second in the NCHSAA 4-A’s this year in Volleyball and Basketball and her NWG Lady Vikings Basketball team was (58-2) over a two-year period….Man this would kick in the winds of change in a hurry at NWG, if Coach Joyner(Bulla) is GONE…..+++++

Longtime Northwest Guilford High School teacher and coach Darlene Joyner has announced today that she will retire from her teaching position at Northwest Guilford High effective May 1st of this school year. She is a graduate of Northwest Guilford High School and Guilford College where she is a member of the Guilford College Athletic Hall of Fame. After graduating from Guilford College, she came back to teach and coach at her high school alma mater Northwest Guilford for the entirety of her thirty one year career. At Northwest Guilford, she led the softball team to the NCHSAA state championship in 1996 and has served as head coach in basketball and volleyball during her time at Northwest.

Coach Joyner will likely remain as the head girls basketball coach at Northwest, a position she has held since 2002 with an overall record of 281 wins and 99 losses. She has lead the basketball team the last two seasons to a 58-2 record. This past year, the team won the West Regional championship and was the NCHSAA 4A state runner up.

As for volleyball, Coach Joyner will be retiring from the leadership of the program that she has led as head coach since 1994. She finishes up her volleyball coaching career with an astounding overall record of 500 wins and 101 losses, 20 conference championships including the last 16 consecutive seasons winning the conference title. This past year the team advanced to the first state championship in the history of the volleyball program and finished as West Region champions and NCHSAA 4A state runner up.

  • Good Luck said,

Wow! 31 years as the coach of the school that you graduated from. I would think this has to be a hard thing to walk away from especially when you consider how much this program has won over that time frame. Joyner has basically had nearly 35 years of her life tied to one school. That is amazing to me. The press release said she wanted to spend more time with the grand kids but I also think she would truly miss the basketball kids that she would be leaving behind. That part of the story may not kick in until next fall. Good luck which ever decision you make Joyner.
