Moving from the Triangle to the Triad for 2017 and 2018

DURHAM, N.C. – The 30th annual Powerade State Games of North Carolina will wrap up in the Triangle this weekend and the event is preparing to move to the Triad for 2017 and 2018. The Powerade State Games involve more athletes, more sports, more venues and more hours of competition than the Olympic Games. Athletes from 95+ North Carolina counties and South Carolina are participating in the 2016 Games. More than 800 teams, more than 12,000 athletes and a $4+ million economic impact will be leaving the Triangle for the Triad next year.

The Powerade State Games of North Carolina feature 26-sports including: archery, baseball, basketball, bmx, disc golf, fencing, figure skating, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, karate, lacrosse, pickleball, rugby, shooting, skateboarding, soccer, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, track and field, ultimate, sand volleyball and wrestling. The Games are for all ages and skill levels including several 2016 Olympic hopefuls and former Olympians that are competing in the 2016 Powerade State Games.

The host communities in the Triad will include: Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point and Burlington. Greensboro has hosted the Games in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2007 and 2008. Winston-Salem hosted the Games in 2003, 2004, 2011 and 2012. This will be the first time that High Point and Burlington have hosted the event.

The Greensboro Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Winston-Salem Convention & Visitors Bureau, the High Point Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Burlington/Alamance County Convention & Visitors Bureau partnered together to bring North Carolina’s largest multi-sport event to the Triad. “We look forward to bringing four outstanding communities in the Triad together to host the 31st and 32nd Powerade State Games of North Carolina events. The athletic venues in the Triad are outstanding and we are excited to showcase these first-class venues and the exceptional community support in the Triad to our athletes from across North Carolina,” said Chuck Hobgood, president of North Carolina Amateur Sports.
