Happy Birthday to the USA and to Coach Bill Slayton(Southeast Guilford HS/Eastern Guilford HS) here on the 4th of July…

He started out on Highway 29, then hit Highway 40, then it was on to Highway 68 and this journey took ‘The Coach’ all over Guilford County going to different high schools and then later he even hit Highway 70 on the way to Eastern Guilford High School…

All of those highways and birthdays, 29, 40, 68, 70 and now today, on the 4th of July, we celebrate our nation’s birthday and the birthday of Coach Bill Slayton, as he hits Highway/Birthday 85….

Coach Slayton is still a hard-working man and these days he is working hard to take care of and support his wife Darcy and they make a real good team…A Championship Level team and we wish a very Happy Birthday to the ‘Old Coach’, Coach Bill Slayton and we thank him for what he has done in and around our county over the years and he is now in the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame….

Highway/Birthday 85 and still with “The Drive” to keep it coming and get it going….Good Job Coach Bill Slayton….

Coach Bill Slayton a former high school football and baseball coach, a former military man who served his country and that makes this day even more important/special, Bill Slayton, from Granite Falls, North Carolina, was born on the 4th of July and he served his country well…

Served us in the military and as a high school teacher and coach…

Coached the Southeast Guilford Falcons to the 1969 NCHSAA 3-A State Baseball Title and took the Falcons to several conference championships in football…Saw that baseball team be led by a young man who later turned pro with the Baltimore Orioles organization, Terry Clapp…Saw his early football teams be led by future FBI agent Don Causey….Sadly, we just saw Terry Clapp pass away this past Spring…

He taught Falcons at Southeast Guilford and Wildcats at Eastern Guilford and helped countless kids along the way…Youmans, Modlins, Pannells, Hacketts, the kid that worked hard to get through Eastern Guilford, later played football at Western Carolina and then went on to become a high school principal(Lance Sockwell), and the list goes on and on…Lance Sockwell, now the principal at Eastern Guilford High School….

Coach Slayton served his country/nation with dedication in the military and he showed the same dedication during his 30-plus years of service in the Guilford County Schools…
