Greensboro Grasshoppers’ first baseman Josh Naylor has been traded to the San Diego Padres

Josh Naylor(Greensboro Grasshoppers) to San Diego, as the Miami Marlins give up Naylor and others, as the Fish went fishing on Friday for two starting pitchers and got them in the deal with the Padres…The Marlins give up part of their future by letting former First Round pick Naylor go, but the Marlins are playing for now/2016 in their on-going effort to make it to the post-season and to be a part of the MLB Playoffs….Naylor was named to the South Atlantic League All-Star team back in June and he played in the MLB Futures Game earlier this month in San Diego, as part of the MLB All-Star Game events…Naylor was held out of the SAL All-Star Game by the Marlins and his All-Star Game nomination was not cut out to be set-in-stone, as Naylor made a bad move prior the the SAL event…

Josh Naylor accidently cut his teammate Stone Garrett with a knife back in early June in what was described a “prank gone bad” and when it was all said-and-done, Garrett, an Eighth Round pick by the Marlins in 2015, was lost for the season…Garrett has now been gone for over a month and a-half…Now the First Round pick from 2015(Naylor) is gone too and the Marlins were looking for starting pitching, but they also have a history of trading talents who get caught up in a crazy/wild moment or two….

Chris Coughlan, a one-time top-rated second baseman and later an outfielder who was the National League Rookie of the Year in his first season with Miami, he once got involved with shaving cream pie to the face during a home run celebration and Coughlan tore a meniscus and he was never quite the same and not long after that he was shown the door in a trade…

One-time major prospect Logan Morrison was one heck of a first baseman in Greensboro, did quite well when he moved to the outfield when he joined the Marlins and then Morrison got very active on Twitter, was told to cut it out, did slow down, but continued Tweeting out way-out and crazy tweets that the Marlins didn’t like and not too soon after all of this, Logan Morrison was traded to the Seattle Mariners by the Marlins…Now Maylor is gone too after the knife incident and it may just be a coincidence and you have to agree trades warrant and call for top prospects to be the best bait, but the old bait-and-switch is often more that just a cut-and-dry deal when there has been a knife trick involved….You just never know, you know….

More on Naylor and more on the on the deal/trade and more from us later on….

Here is the inside on Josh Naylor from MLB.com:
Naylor, 19, was Miami’s first-round pick in 2015. The first baseman from Canada appeared in the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game on July 10, and on Thursday, he was ranked by MLBPipeline.com as the organization’s No. 2 prospect. The left-handed-hitting first baseman is batting .269 with nine home runs and 54 RBIs at Class A Greensboro(Grasshoppers).

from www.mlb.com:

MIAMI — The Marlins and Padres continue to be a match when it comes to trades, and the clubs on Friday completed a blockbuster seven-player deal, bringing right-handers Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea to Miami. San Diego received a mix of Minor League and big league players, including injured hard-throwing reliever Carter Capps and two of Miami’s top prospects.

Also heading to the Marlins is Double-A San Antonio right-hander Tayron Guerrero, while the Padres also received right-hander Jarred Cosart, first-base prospect Josh Naylor and right-handed prospect Luis Castillo.

Naylor is Miami’s No. 2-ranked prospect by MLBPipeline.com, and Castillo ranks sixth.

Friday’s mega deal marked the second time in four weeks the Marlins and Padres have done business together. On June 30, Miami acquired reliever Fernando Rodney for prospect Chris Paddack(Greensboro Grasshoppers).

Jeff Mills from the News and Record on Josh Naylor:
The deal hurts Greensboro’s playoff chances. The Hoppers are one game out of first place in the South Atlantic League’s Northern Division standings.

And now they must go the rest of the season without Naylor, who has batted third or fourth in their lineup all season.

Naylor is 10th in the Sally League with 54 RBIs, and is among the league leaders with 24 doubles and a team-high nine home runs.

A left-handed hitter, Naylor has heated up, batting .326 in July to raise his season average to .269.

The 12th overall pick in the 2015 draft out of Mississauga, Ontario, is the highest-drafted Canadian hitter in history and signed for a $2.2 million bonus.
