Elon Men’s Golf: Charlie May Qualifies for U.S. Amateur

ELON, N.C. – Rising Elon University junior men’s golfer Charlie May recently earned a spot in the 116th U.S. Amateur Championship that will be contested August 15-21 at the Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

The Topsfield, Mass. native, qualified for the competition after placing second at the Massachusetts Golf Association U.S. Amateur Qualifying tournament. His was contested at the George Wright Golf Course. May fired a two-round mark of 139 to finish second to Ryan Tombs.

The field at the 2016 U.S. Amateur Championship will include 312 players. Over the first two days of competition, two rounds of 18-hole stroke play will be played on the two qualifying courses. After those two rounds, the field will be cut to just 64 players. Six rounds of match play will begin on Aug. 19 and the championship will conclude with a 36-hole championship match on Aug. 23.

May finished the 2015-16 season with a 74.11 stroke average over 27 rounds in 10 tournaments for the Phoenix. Out of the 10 tournaments, he finished in the top-30 in three tournaments. May registered his best finish of the season at the Seahawk Intercollegiate, claiming a tie for 10th individually in a rain-shortened 36-hole tournament with a mark of 143 (71-72).
