GREENSBORO, N.C. – – As some of the world’s best current soccer stars are preparing to play for a gold medal at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and two-time FIFA World Cup champion Mia Hamm will be playing golf in The Louis DeJoy and Aldona Z. Wos Family Foundation Pro-Am at the Wyndham Championship, the tournament announced today. The 77th annual Wyndham Championship is set for Aug. 15-21, 2016 at Sedgefield Country Club.

Hamm’s Wyndham Championship appearance on Wednesday, Aug. 17, will come just two days before the women’s soccer gold medal match at the Olympic Games, and it’s a safe bet the two-time gold medalist will be keeping an eye on the games as she prepares to play with a PGA TOUR golfer.

Hamm was named the FIFA World Player of the Year in 2001 and ’02 and is listed as one of FIFA’s 125 best living players as chosen by international sports legend, Pele. Hamm led the United States to the gold medal at the Olympics in 1996 in Atlanta and 2004 in Athens, Greece. She led the United States to the World Cup title in 1991 and ’99. A native of Selma, Ala., she attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she was a three-time national player of the year and became the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer. She helped the team win four-consecutive NCAA Division I National Championships. She was All-American and All-Atlantic Coast Conference in her final three seasons at North Carolina.

The PGA TOUR golfer with whom Hamm will play and her tee time have not yet been determined.
