College Soccer News – Anna Smither Named Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach at Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Former prep coach and international soccer player Anna Smither was officially hired as assistant coach for the women’s soccer program at Guilford College Friday.

Smither joins head coach Michael Shenigo’s staff as he enters his fourth season at the helm of the women’s soccer program. Over the previous three seasons, Shenigo has taken the program from one win in
2013, to a 7-10-1 record last year.

A 2015 Meredith College graduate, Smither previously served as head coach of the women’s Wake Futbol Club U-14 team and as the junior varsity head coach at her alma mater, Saint Mary’s High School in
Raleigh, North Carolina. Prior to joining the prep ranks, she served as a soccer instructor at Soccer Shots training facility in Durham, teaching children ages 2-8. She completed an athletic training
internship with the Carolina Railhawks of the North American Soccer League in 2013-14.

Smither enjoyed a successful collegiate career at Meredith, where she was a First Team All-USA South Conference defender in 2014, as well as a USA South All-Tournament performer. She has also been a member of the USA Deaf Soccer team since 2008, where she has competed in the 2009 Deaflympics in Taipei, Taiwan and the 2013 games in Sofia, Bulgaria. She helped the U.S. to gold medals in both events. Smither was also a member of the 2012 Deaf World Cup held in Ankara, Turkey, and the 2016 cup held in Salerno, Italy where she added a third and fourth gold medal to her resume.

The Quakers open their season September 1 at North Carolina Wesleyan College. Their first home contest is September 9 versus Salem College at 4:00 p.m. at Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center.
