Wyatt Smith’s Game of the Week Preview- Week 2: T. Wingate Andrews @ Southwest Guilford

Southwest Guilford heads into Friday night’s matchup coming off a 27-13 win over W-S Reynolds in their season opener last week. Junior quarterback Jaren Rainey showed off his arm and helped his team on the ground as well. The dual-threat quarterback was 6-14 for 67 yards, and had 10 carries for 127 yards with two touchdowns. Bryson Jumper had 14 carries for 127 yards for the Cowboys. After one game this season, it appears that the loss of Jeremiah Brown at WR has turned the Cowboys into a more of a running team with many players playing the receiver position, including QB Jaren Rainey.

Andrews is playing their opening game of the 2016 season on Friday, under new head coach John Patterson. The former Red Raider will look to carry his alma mater to the playoffs again this season. Their season opener will be a great test to see how well coach Patterson’s squad will do this year. Andrews played into the third round of the 2A playoffs last season, a devastating loss to Clinton – 14-13. The Red Raiders were 12-2 in the 2015 campaign and their only regular season loss was to the Southwest Cowboys. Losing by one point in the third round of the playoffs, and their only other loss of the season in ’15 coming to the Cowboys, the Red Raiders will be out for blood and will try to leave the ‘Boys with a chip on their shoulders this year.

This could very well be one of the best games in the county this week, even though there are some good matchups on paper. Look for the Cowboys to try to take advantage of having a game under their belt, and Andrews is playing for the first time. I believe that this will be a close game, and if Andrews can stop the ground attack of Rainey and Jumper, they will have a chance to win this game.

PREDICTION:

T.W. Andrews 18
