Elon Volleyball Rallies for Five-Set Win Against Campbell

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Trailing 2-1 after three sets, the Elon volleyball team rallied to force a fifth set and claim a 3-2 (25-20, 13-25, 13-25, 25-15, 15-13) thriller against Campbell tonight, Aug. 27, in the Charlotte Invitational in Halton Arena.

Kam Terry led all players with 14 kills followed by Kayla Agae with 10 and Sydney Busa with eight. Rox Wood posted the first double-double of her career with a career-high 33 assists and 10 digs.

On defense, the Phoenix (1-1) out-blocked the Camels, 10-7, with the help of six blocks from Ally Karle and four by Michelle Klein, while Maddie Jaudon finished with 19 digs in the match.

The Camels (1-2) saw 11 kills from Jenny Tait and 10 from Loni Kreun. Summer Schuitema tallied 29 assists, while Kayla Schanback finished with a match-high 30 digs.

How it Happened
With the Phoenix leading by one, 9-8, kills by Agae, Busa and Terry helped Elon to a 5-1 run to move ahead by five, 14-9. A Karle kill extended the advantage to as much as six, 18-12, before the Camels closed the gap to two, 20-18. A kill and ace by Maner for back-to-back points gave the Phoenix set point, 24-18, as Terry closed out the win with a kill, 25-20.

In the second set, back-to-back kills by Terry and another by Busa gave Elon a 4-3 edge. However, Campbell managed eight straight to take the lead, 11-4. Kills by Busa and Karle helped pull the Phoenix within four, 11-7, but the Camels were able to maintain its lead and claim the set, 25-13, to even the match.

The maroon and gold took an early 8-5 lead in the first set off kills by Terry, Scott and Karle and a solo block by Klein. Campbell then moved in front 9-8 and held the lead to close out the set on an 11-0 run for a 25-13 final and 2-1 match advantage.

With the fourth set tied at five-all, an ace by Klein and solo block by Karle led to a 10-6 lead for Elon. After a Campbell timeout and the Phoenix still in front by four, 17-13, a block by Busa and Karle led to four kills by Agae to cap a 9-0 run and extend its advantage to 10, 23-13. The maroon and gold used the momentum to win the set, 25-15, to keep the match alive and send it to a deciding fifth set.

In the fifth and final set, a kill by Busa and ace by Klein put the Phoenix in front by two, 7-5, before Campbell took four straight for a 9-7 edge, forcing an Elon timeout. With the Camels leading by four, 11-7, a kill by Karle and block by Karle and Scott sparked a 4-0 run to pull the Phoenix even, 11-all. With the score at 12-all, two kills by Terry gave the maroon and gold set point as a CU error closed out the set for Elon, 15-13, and the match, 3-2.
