CLEMSON, S.C. – The Elon University women’s soccer team fell to the No. 8-ranked Clemson Tigers 4-0 on Sunday, Aug. 28, at Historic Riggs Field.

After the Phoenix held Clemson to a goal in the first 45 minutes, the Tigers scored three goals in a span of two minutes in the second half to secure the victory. Elon falls to 1-3 overall with the loss and Clemson improves to 3-1 with the win.

Elon played an excellent first half defensively holding the eighth-ranked Tigers to one goal. Clemson scored just over six minutes into the match to take a 1-0 lead. After Catrina Atanda intercepted an Elon header, she fired a shot into the top left corner, giving the Tigers the lead.

Laura Mitchell had a chance in the 32nd minute blocked by a defender after taking away a Clemson pass. Elon’s strong half defensively kept the score 1-0 at halftime.

Just over five minutes after the break, the Tigers scored three goals in a span of two minutes starting at the 50:46 mark to create a 4-0 cushion and secure the win. The Clemson was awarded a penalty kick, which Atanda converted, and a finish from Shannon Horgan and an Elon own goal capped off the three-goal surge.

Mitchell had one last great opportunity for the Phoenix in the 60th minute. Her shot off an excellent ball from Breanna Mitchell forced Clemson goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan to make a great save.

The Tigers outshot the Phoenix 27-4 and had the 6-4 edge in the corner count. Katelyn Fowler made four saves in her Elon debut.

The Phoenix continues its four-match road swing next week. Elon faces Coastal Carolina on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 6 p.m. and then heads to Western Carolina for a match on Sunday, Sept. 4, at 2 p.m.
