Remy Tamer to lead HPU women’s cross country program

HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point University athletic director Dan Hauser has named Remy Tamer as the second Div. I head coach in the women’s cross country program’s history.

Tamer joins the HPU staff after spending the past two years at Florida State University, where he mentored a number of All-ACC selections and NCAA qualifiers.

“We are very excited to announce Remy Tamer as our new women’s cross country head coach at High Point University,” Hauser said. “Remy has experienced extraordinary success as a two-time Academic All-America student-athlete at UNC Wilmington and as an assistant at Florida State. His enthusiasm and positive energy are contagious and I’m confident Remy will continue the championship success of our HPU women’s cross country program.”

During Tamer’s time in Tallahassee, women’s cross country runners garnered four All-ACC selections and nine USTFCCCA all-region accolades. Cross country standout Carmela Cardama Baez was both an all-ACC and USTFCCCA All-Region selection.

On the track, Chelsea Jarvis earned second team indoor All-America honors at the NCAA Championship (800-meter run), while Tamer helped mentor the women’s distance medley relay team to a second place ACC showing in 2016, just missing NCAA qualification by two positions.

Bridget Blake earned second team All-ACC honors in the mile run (indoor), then tallied a runner up finish in the 3000m steeplechase while qualifying for the NCAA Championship in the event. Blake also finished sixth in the outdoor mile and garnered All-ACC accolades.

Tamer mentored Jarvis to All-ACC accolades and NCAA East qualification in the outdoor 800m, while seniors Christine Griggs (10000m) and Georgia Peel (1500m) qualified for NCAA regional competition in their respective outdoor events.

On the strength of the Seminoles’ distance squad, Florida State captured the 2016 ACC Outdoor Championship.

While in Tallahassee, Tamer also worked as a professional track & field timer and served as an assistant track and cross country coach at Maclay High School while consulting in sport psychology.

Tamer was a two-time Academic All-American at UNC Wilmington, where he also served as a two-year team captain in 2010 and 2011. He won the Seahawks’ cross country Rookie of the Year Award in 2007 and is a part of the school record 4x800m relay time that still stands today.

He graduated from UNC Wilmington in 2011 with a degree in psychology and earned his master’s degree from Florida State in sport psychology in 2014.

Tamer also has worked as a resident intern at ZAP Fitness in Blowing Rock, N.C., a professional running club that features a strong alumni base.

He is a USTFCCCA certified track & field coach and has earned his USATF Level 1 coaching certification.
