College Volleyball Final – Guilford 3, John Wesley 0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Casey Davis put away a game-high 13 kills and Heather Crawford added 11 on .526 hitting in Guilford College’s 3-0 volleyball win over John Wesley University Thursday. The scores in the Quakers’ season opener were: 25-18, 25-16, 25-16.

The Lions’ Olivia Bullard put away three quick kills to spark the visitors to an early lead before Guilford’s Morgan Tompkins registered a kill and proceeded to serve up nine straight points, including four Davis putaways. John Wesley (1-2) never drew within seven points after the decisive 9-0 spurt.

Tompkins had a similar impact in the second set as she stepped to the service line with a 9-8 edge, but when she was done the hosts held a 14-9 edge. The Lions made it a 17-13 game before the Quakers (1-0) closed it out with an 8-3 burst that included two kills and a service ace by Jessica Sheek.

John Wesley led 7-5 and found itself tied as 12-12 in the third set, but Guilford reeled off eight straight points with Tina Eucker serving. The burst opened an insurmountable 20-12 edge.

Sheek added seven kills and Tompkins finished with six for the Quakers, which outhit the Lions, .200-.028. Christian Ritter paced Guilford’s defense with 19 digs and Davis added 10. Eucker, the Quakers’ rookie setter, had 37 assists, plus six digs, an ace and a block.

Olivia Bullard’s eight kills led the Lions. Cameron Dubuc added 12 digs and Chelsea Edwards contributed 13 assists.

Coach Emily Gann’s Quakers resume their season this Saturday and Sunday with four games at the Averett University Cougar Classic in Danville, Virginia.
