NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Greensboro College men’s soccer team dropped its season opener to the Captains of Christopher Newport University Friday, 7-2.

The Captains (1-0) struck for the game’s first goal in the second minute before the Pride (0-1) found the equalizer. Carlos Barragan scored his first goal of the season off a double assist by Gerardo Peraza and Max Elliott Jenks-Gilbert.

After Greensboro evened the score, Christopher Newport scored the game’s next six goals to establish a five goal lead.

Greensboro pulled within 7-2 with a late goal by Obi Collins, but could not get any closer.

“This was a good learning experience for our team to play a good CNU team,” Head Coach Tony Falvino said. “We made some careless mistakes, and CNU was able to capitalize.

“I was really proud of the way our newcomers played, but we have a lot of areas that we need to improve on.”

Jaime Payamps took the loss in goal for the Pride, while Zach Pedini recorded three saves for the Captains.

The Pride men’s soccer team will return to action at 1 p.m. Sunday when they travel to Virginia Beach, Va., to take on the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan. For more information on Greensboro College men’s soccer, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
