GREENSBORO, N.C – Guilford College’s Noah Hedrick tallied two goals in the Quakers’ Sunday afternoon victory over Piedmont College, 4-2, to mark the first regular season contest under new Guilford head coach Cory Speed.
Hedrick capitalized off a rebound from a Seth Garrison shot that hit the post to score the Quakers’ first goal of the afternoon in the 12th minute. The Quakers added to their lead quickly as Enrique Gudino (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) dribbled through the left side to double Guilford’s advantage 22 minutes into the contest. The Lions’ Victor Munoz responded after missing a shot high minutes by timing a deflection to the right side of the box for Chase Kane, who booted the ball into the net to put Piedmont on the board.
Scoring continued to pick up entering the second half as the Quakers executed a well-timed passing piece where the Quakers produced two quick passes from the near-left corner to the top of the 18-yard box to the center of the six-yard box where Hedrick one-touched the ball into the net with help from Christian Torres (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford) and Ricky Aguilar (Sanford, N.C./Southern Lee) to increase the lead in the 51st minute. Piedmont took advantage of a Guilford foul in the middle of the 18-yard box to earn a penalty kick five minutes later. Kane notched his second goal, sliding the ball underneath Guilford goalie Eric Hayes, to cut the Quakers’ lead. Guilford put the lead on ice in the 76th minute when Jake Grieco fed Omar Solis inside the six-yard box to preserve the win.
The Quakers out-shot the Lions, 15-10, and held the edge on corner kicks, 5-1. Guilford tallied 18 fouls compared Piedmont’s eight.
Eric Hayes (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) made three saves in net for the Quakers. Piedmont’s Elliot Sailes stopped four shots.
The Quakers return to action inside Appenzeller Field at Armfield Athletic Center tomorrow, hosting LaGrange College at 4 p.m.
