GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Ricky Aguilar (Sanford, N.C./Southern Lee) netted two goals as the Quakers claimed a Monday afternoon victory over LaGrange College, 5-1.
The Quakers struck quickly to start the contest when Christian Torres (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford) partnered with Jake Greico for a fast break on the left side to feed Aguilar, putting the Quakers ahead 2:51 into the contest. Errick Sturm countered for LaGrange in the 18th minute as a deflection on the right side bounced in his favor inside the box, resulting in a clean break to the net to tie the score. The Panthers held a slight possession advantage going forward, but a long through-ball from Mark Dandanell to a sprinting Greico changed momentum in the 43 minute as Greico rolled the ball into the net, ending the half on a positive note for the Quakers, re-claiming the lead.
Guilford picked up two penalty-kick goals back-to-back in the early portion of the second half. Aguilar was fouled inside a crowded 18-yard box off of a corner kick to earn a spot from the mark, which he booted into the goal on the left side in the 50th minute. Leke Ademoyero (Pfafftown, N.C./Reagan) collected the second penalty kick in the 68th minute when he was knocked down from behind on a challenge in the center of the 18-yard box. Ademoyero chipped the penalty kick in on the right side of the goal to extend the lead. Kyle Bias provided the exclamation point in the 82nd minute as A.J. Hawkins rolled a through-ball to Bias inside the box, chipping the shot over the goalie for the Quakers’ fifth goal.
Guilford out-shot LaGrange 25-10 thanks to 17 second-half shots. The Quakers held a decisive 12-3 edge on corner kicks, including an 8-0 second-half advantage.
Eric Hayes (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) (2-0) made four saves in net for the Quakers. LaGrange’s Bonner Brooks stopped seven shots before Cory Aycock relieved him for the final 13:28 of the contest, making two saves.
The Quakers take a short break before returning to the field, traveling to Ferrum College for a 7 p.m. contest Wednesday night.
