College Volleyball Results – Guilford Goes 1-1 at Averett Classic

DANVILLE, Va. – Rookie Michaela Allred helped rally Guilford College’s volleyball team to a 3-2 win over North Carolina Wesleyan College Sunday in the Quakers’ final match at the Averett University Cougar Classic.

Allred, who entered the match in the fourth set with Guilford trailing 2-1, put away six of her seven kills in the decisive fifth set. Guilford prevailed, 12-25, 18-25, 25-22, 25-18, 15-13, and improved to 3-2 on the season.
Jessica Sheek led the Quakers’ offense with 14 kills and rookie Tina Eucker set up 36 assists. Christian Ritter’s 20 digs paced the defense and helped her earn one of seven spots on the all-tournament team.

Guilford’s day started with a 3-1 loss to William Peace University. The Pacers took the first two sets, 25-22, 25-20, before the Quakers took set three, 25-20. Guilford rallied from a 19-13 deficit to tie the fourth set at 22-22, but William Peace’s Tempestt Frazier stopped the comeback with her 15th kill, which was followed by two Guilford hitting errors.

William Peace’s Laura Bland led all students with 17 kills, and added 14 digs. The Pacers’ all-tournament pick, Carson Williams, picked up a match-best 24 digs. Liana Solomon had 42 assists and seven pickups.

Casey Davis led Guilford with 12 kills and 20 digs. Ritter also had 20 digs and Eucker added 21 assists.

In Saturday’s play, Guilford fell to Salve Regina University, 25-20, 26-24, 25-17, 25-19, 15-12, despite Davis’ 17 kills and Eucker’s 41 assists. The Quakers knocked off Emory & Henry College, 25-20, 25-17, 25-23, behind Sheek’s 10 kills with no errors in 16 attempts.
