Elon’s Fowler Garners CAA Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Week Honors

RICHMOND, Va. – Elon University women’s soccer’s freshman goalkeeper Katelyn Fowler has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week on Monday, Sept. 5, as announced by the conference office.

The New Hartford, N.Y. native earned the honor after posting 135 minutes of shutout soccer in Elon’s victories over Coastal Carolina on Thursday and Western Carolina on Sunday. In the two matches combined, Fowler made six saves for the Phoenix.

Fowler came into the match on Thursday at halftime as a substitute, did not allow a goal in the second half, and made two big saves to help the Phoenix preserve a 2-1 victory over the Chanticleers. Her biggest save against Coastal Carolina came in the 70th minute when she made a one-on-one stop to keep the score at 1-1. Elon would score the game-winner seven minutes later. Fowler also earned her first-career shutout in a 1-0 victory at Western Carolina, making four saves in 90 minutes of action.

In addition to Fowler, College of Charleston’s Laura Ortega also earned a weekly honor, as the conference named her CAA Player of the Week.

Elon returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 8, concluding its road swing with a 7 p.m. match at Charlotte. The Phoenix returns to Rudd Field on Sunday, Sept. 11, against Richmond for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
