LEXINGTON, Ky. – The High Point University women’ soccer team fell on the road at Kentucky by a score of 3-0 on Sunday afternoon in Lexington, Ky. Junior Alex Hank and sophomore Emily Lyon combined to make eight saves in the contest.

“I am very happy with the things we accomplished today,” head coach Marty Beall said. “We asked the team to work on improving our possession. Kentucky is a very competitive and athletic squad so for us to be able to maintain strings of possession is very encouraging for our development. Two of the goals we gave up were off turnovers in our defensive third and I am glad we were trying to build out of the back against them. You have to work on these things against a team the level of Kentucky in order to grow as a program.”

The Panthers entered halftime down 2-0 after allowing goals to Tanya Samarzich and Kalli Vogel in the opening 45 minutes. Samarzich opened the scoring with a header off a cross from Zoe Swift in the 16th minute then Vogel followed suit, finishing a Swift cross in the 42nd minute.

Kentucky tacked on a third goal in the 71st minute as Samarzich tallied her second goal of the day off a give and go with Gina Crosetti after HPU turned the ball over in the midfield.

High Point was outshot in the contest by a margin of 19-8 and had an 11-4 deficit in shots on goal as HPU struggled to create chances against a composed UK defense.

Hank played the first half and made three saves for the Panthers while Lyon stopped five saves in the second half.

HPU drops to 3-2-1 on the season with the loss while Kentucky improves to 2-2-1.

The Panthers continue their six-game road trip on Friday, Sept. 9, when they head to Clemson, S.C., to take on the No. 6-ranked Tigers of Clemson University. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
