GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College women’s lacrosse, men’s swimming, women’s swimming, and softball teams were among those taking part in the annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb Saturday, Sept. 3, in downtown Greensboro.

They and other participants climbed 72 flights of stairs, representing the highest floor the New York Fire Department firefighters reached after two hijacked airliners crashed into the World Trade Center towers on Sept. 11, 2011.

Each member of the teams wore a tag with a picture of a fallen hero, along with their name and the department they represented.

Three hundred forty-three firefighters and 72 police officers lost their lives on that day.

“We climbed to ensure the fallen service members are never forgotten,” Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach Christie Hebert said. “In addition to the climbing, we complete their journey through our dedication, training, and physical fitness.”

This marks the second consecutive year the Pride women’s lacrosse and softball teams endured the 72-flight climb, but for the swimming teams it marked the first time, and it provided a positive impact of remembrance for the team.

“It was an honor for our swim teams to participate in the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb this year,” Head Swimming Coach Katie McNerney said. “It was very moving to follow some of Greensboro’s finest as they completed the 72 story walk in full gear.

“The experience was humbling and allowed us to show our appreciation for all of the people who lost their lives on that tragic day.”
