STUDENTS FROM REIDSVILLE & PERSON EARN PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK AWARDS

CHAPEL HILL — Courtney Jackson of Person High School and Austyn Chestnut of Reidsville High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.

Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.

Jackson, a senior at Person High School, helped lead the Rockets volleyball team to three wins on the week and the team is off to an 8-0 start. She accounted for 43 kills, 15 blocks and 9 service aces as the Rockets defeated Orange, Jordan and defending 2A State Champions South Granville. At 6’0” tall, she is committed to Campbell University where she plans to play volleyball next season.

Chestnut, also a senior, tied an NCHSAA Record for punt returns for touchdown in a single game as he hauled three punts back for scores in a 63-0 win over Morehead. Chestnut found the end zone from 34, 49 and 71 yards out on the night on punt returns and added a 31-yard interception return that set up Reidsville’s first score of the night. His three return touchdowns also place him in the NFHS National record book tied for fourth all-time for punt return touchdowns in a single game.

TWC SportsChannel typically announces the winners of the awards during its Sports Night show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients will also be recognized via Twitter and Facebook. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
