College Women’s Soccer Final – Salem 2, Guilford 0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Salem College’s Sydney Priest netted a goal in the final minute of the first half as Guilford College dropped a Friday afternoon contest to Salem, 2-0. This game is the first of a two-day tournament, the Guilford/Salem Classic, held at each institution’s home field for one day.

Both teams battled over 90-degree temperatures to open the contest as offensive opportunities were few. The Quakers held off the Spirits and held momentum offensively for most of the latter portion of the period as the heat reflected off the turf. Salem earned a free kick in the final minute of the first half where Alyssa Denkovich fed Priest with 25 seconds remaining to claim the lead at halftime.

Salem added to their lead in the 61st minute as Martha Santos collected a Guilford goal kick and fed Brooke Bukas to claim a 2-1 lead.

Salem out-shot the Quakers, 16-8, and held the edge on corner kicks, 5-2.

Cheyenne Grim made nine saves in net for the Quakers. Salem’s Kimmi Templeton made three saves, starting the first half, while Hannah Wagner made one second-half save.

The Quakers continue in the Guilford/Salem Classic tomorrow, facing Meredith College for a 4:30 p.m. contest at Salem College.
