Elon Volleyball Sweeps Norfolk State to Open Tournament

ELON, N.C. – The Elon volleyball team tallied its third straight win with a sweep of Norfolk State, 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-21), today, Sept. 9, in the first match of the Elon Phoenix Classic in Alumni Gym.

The Phoenix (6-2) was led by 11 kills from Kam Terry who also recorded eight digs. Rox Wood posted a match-high 20 assists followed by 10 from Sydel Curry. On defense, Maddie Jaudon finished with 19 digs. Michelle Klein and Kayla Agae helped the maroon and gold out-block the Spartans, 10-2, with five blocks each.

The Spartans (1-8) saw a double-double with a team-high 10 kills and 10 digs from Jessica Johnson. Sydney Dailey tallied a match-high 21 digs followed by 18 from Melvina Brown.

How it Happened
Three Elon blocks by Ally Karle, Terry and Ebony Scott helped the Phoenix to a 6-1 lead to start the first set. The Spartans rallied to pull within one, 13-12, before a 7-1 Phoenix run that was capped by kills by Agae and Terry made it a 20-13 advantage. The maroon and gold held on to its lead using a Terry kill to claim the set, 25-20.

With Elon leading by one, 7-6, in the second set, an Agae kill led to four straight to make it an 11-6 edge. The Phoenix maintained its advantage using a block by Klein and Wood to move the set to 21-15. After back-to-back aces by the Spartans forced an Elon timeout with the lead at one, 22-21, NSU used another ace to take its first lead, 24-23, and reach set point. The Phoenix answered to take the last three points and a 2-0 lead after a 26-24 victory.

Elon jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the third set, forcing an early Spartan timeout. A kill by Scott and block by Busa and Klein extended the maroon and gold lead to seven, 20-13. NSU closed the gap to four, 24-21, but the Phoenix was able to secure the final point of the set to win, 25-21, and take the match.

Elon now leads the all-time series against NSU, 6-0…Every Phoenix win has come in the form of a sweep (3-0).
