College Men’s Soccer Final – Guilford 3, Averett 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Omar Solis totaled three points as the Quakers claimed a Sunday afternoon victory over Averett University, 3-1.

Both sides held even for the first half as the Quakers produced two close-call offensive opportunities, including a Solis shot from outside the six-yard box on the right side. Guilford held a 10-6 shot advantage after the first half, where the Cougars only mustered one close opportunity at net.

Scoring opened up in the second half as Solis dodged a defender inside the six-yard box and passed the ball back to the top of the 18-yard box where Mark Dandanell booted the ball into the net for the match’s first goal. Eight minutes later, Averett’s Tomas Andreasson was fouled inside the right half of the box, earning a successful penalty kick attempt to tie the contest.

The Quakers pulled away fast as Christian Torres (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford) beat Averett goalie Austin Bramhall on the left side of the six-yard box on a centering pass to Solis to re-claim the lead. Guilford placed the contest out of reach in the 78th minute as Guilford earned a foul inside the 18-yard box to place Seth Garrison (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford) on the mark for the penalty kick. Garrison beat Bramhall on the left side for the goal to seal the victory.

The Quakers out-shot Averett, 23-15, and held a decisive 15-4 edge on corner kicks.

Eric Hayes (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) made four saves in net for the Quakers. Bramhall stopped five shots for Averett.

The Quakers return to action Wednesday, traveling to N.C. Wesleyan College for a 2 p.m. contest.
