College Men’s Soccer Final – Mary Washington 4, Guilford 0

DANVILLE, Va. – University of Mary Washington’s Ryan Van Maanen amassed two goals as Guilford College dropped a Saturday evening contest to Mary Washington, 4-0, played at Averett University. The game was delayed an hour due to lightning in the area.

The Quakers held off the Eagles early in the first half as the Eagles held the offensive advantage as Mary Washington fired the first eight shots of the contest. Van Maanen booted his first goal into the net in the 31st minute for the only goal in the first half. Both sides held each other without a shot to close out the remainder of the half.

Ethan Greene connected with Van Maanen in the box for a 71st-minute goal to widen the lead in the second half. Riley Fisher followed the goal with one of his own in the 84th minute, followed by a Gabriel Soriano goal 5:20 later to close the game.

The Eagles out-shot the Quakers, 24-1, and corner kicks, 9-3. Eric Hayes (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) made four saves in net for the Quakers. Matt Spencer earned the shut-out with no saves in net for Mary Washington.

The Quakers return home tomorrow to face Averett at 2:30 p.m. inside Appenzeller Field at Armfield Athletic Center.
