Fowler’s Penalty Save Secures a 3-3 Draw for Elon Women’s Soccer

ELON, N.C. – Katelyn Fowler saved a penalty in the second overtime period and a late goal from Erin Tanhauser in regulation helped the Elon University women’s soccer team earn a 3-3 draw against Richmond on Sunday, Sept. 11, at Rudd Field.

“The game was excited and had a little bit of everything”, said Chris Neal “We saw goals, nutmegs, a ton of emotion, a saved penalty in overtime to name a few things. You can’t script this type of excitement. This game with Richmond felt like a huge conference match, so I am glad we got to experience this type of match at this point in the season.”

The Phoenix moves to 3-4-1 overall and Richmond’s mark changes to 4-2-1 after the result.

HIGHLIGHTS
The Spiders got on the score sheet first in the 13th minute as Meaghan Carrigan finished a pass from Lexi Prillaman into the top right corner from 18 yards out to give Richmond a 1-0 lead.

Elon answered with a goal from Nyah Spearman in the 32nd minute to tie up the match 1-1. Tanhauser chipped a ball through to Spearman and she calmly finished the play for the equalizer.

Just 10 minutes later, Alexis de Groot scored her first collegiate goal as her shot was deflected in the 42ndminute to give the Phoenix a 2-1 lead. Richmond would then level the match in the 44th minute after Alyssa Walker’s header off a corner kick and the score was 2-2 going into halftime.

Richmond would retake the lead in the 53rd minute as Carrigan scored her second of the match to give the Spiders a 3-2 lead. Late in regulation, Tanhauser finished a rebound off a save by the Richmond goalkeeper in the 82nd minute. The rebound save came off an initial header by Susannah Anderson off a corner kick. The goal knotted the score at 3-3 and sent the match into overtime.

The Spiders had a chance to clinch the victory after being awarded a penalty kick after an Elon handball in the 105th minute of the second overtime period. Fowler’s penalty save on Prillaman helped the Phoenix secure a 3-3 draw after 110 minutes of play.
