FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Guilford College’s women’s tennis team opened its fall season this weekend at the Methodist University Fall Tournament. The event featured eight singles flights, populated from nine different institutions.

Coach Dave McCain’s contingent sent seven contestants to the tournament and four Quakers turned in sixth-place finishes. Three others came home in seventh place.

Leigh Fishman had the best record among Guilford’s competitors. She went 1-2 in the fourth-singles flight and placed sixth out of eight. Fishman notched a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Hollins University’s Elizabeth Rochow before falling in the fifth-place contest to Barton University’s Dana Kelly, 6-0, 6-0.

Sophomore Brooklyn Hopkins nearly won her first-round match against Hollins’ Olivia Dannon. Dannon rallied for a 5-7, 6-4, 10-7 opening-round victory in the seventh-singles flight. Hopkins placed sixth in her flight, as did teammates Katie Claggett (#2 flight) and Chandler McDonald (#6).

The Quakers will compete at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Region Tournament Sept. 29-Oct. 2 at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee.
