Wyatt Smith’s Game of the Week Preview- Week 5: WS Reagan @ W.H. Page

If Friday night’s game between Reagan and Page is anything like when the two teams met last season, it should be an entertaining game.

Page left Pfafftown victorious in 2015—by a mere six points—after the Raiders scored on their first two possessions, and led 14-0 halfway into the first quarter.

The Pirates responded to Reagan’s early lead, first with a 51-yard touchdown run by Javon Leake, and a 27-yard pass from Will Jones to James Ellis. Page led 35-21 at halftime, and eventually their lead grew to 56-28, before Reagan went on a fourth quarter tear, scoring 22 unanswered points and trailing by only six points. The Reagan defense came up big and forced Page to punt with 1:53 left in the game, and Reagan’s offense went to work. They drove all the way to the Page 22 before turning the ball over on downs, sealing the victory for the Pirates.

This year’s Reagan team, with a record of (2-2) is in an offensive rebuilding year. The Pirates (3-1) are just as powerful as last season on offense, averaging 49 points a game.

Although the Pirates have won their past three games after dropping their season opener to Davie County, they have struggled to finish games and seem to let up late, with the exception of a 48-0 dominating victory over Northern Guilford.

Page is going to need Will Jones and Javon Leake to match their performances last season against Reagan, when Jones was 22-31 for 390yds and 6 TD’s, and Javon Leake scored twice on rushes of 51 and 1 yard, as well as two receptions for scores.

The Pirates will need to learn from last season, and from their games this season and not let off the gas once they get ahead in the game. If the defense plays like they did against Northern, and the Pirates execute on both sides of the ball, Page should have little trouble with the Raiders.

Reagan will be ready, however, if Page doesn’t execute.

Expect the Pirates to be disciplined, score often, and make less mistakes than they have in their previous games this season. Will Jones, Javon Leake, and Ronald Polite will be big on the offensive side of the ball, and the Pirates’ defense will be led by Caleb Mathews, Tyler DeBerry, and Alan Tisdale. Page will be looking to build momentum and play well as they face East Forsyth next Friday, Sept. 23rd.

Prediction:

  1. Caleb Matthews plays at Dudley; there’s a strong possibility Alan Tisdale may not play tonight due to a separated shoulder. I have noticed my comments disappear when I correct the operators of this site, but the lack of awareness f county wide sports is obvious.

  2. My long lost uncle who used to work in Chapel Hill used to say, “You are never going to right unless you are wrong a few times” and I think he was right.

You are never wrong unless you try and it is all about trying and the rest will take care of itself…Do nothing and accomplish nothing….

Prince Deese(Ragsdale HS/Elon College) has a nice slogan up on his workout center at the Shops at Guilford and it is a good one to remember, “Remember the guy who quit, nobody else does either”…

Keep digging and the truth shall set you free…
