Elon Volleyball Sweeps The Citadel for Ninth Straight Win

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Elon volleyball team tallied its ninth straight win and third straight sweep tonight, Sept. 16, with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-16) victory at The Citadel in the Bulldog Invitational in McAlister Field House.

The Phoenix (12-2) saw a match-high 11 kills from Kam Terry followed by another 10 by Sydney Busa. Michelle Klein tallied seven kills and two aces, while Sydel Curry recorded 31 assists (10.3/set). On defense, Ally Karle posted a match-high five blocks followed by two each from Klein, Busa and Terry. Morgan Maner added a match-high 12 digs and another two aces for the maroon and gold.

The Bulldogs (4-9) had a team-high eight kills from both Moriah Smith and Megan Sowell, Priscilla Irizarry and Sarah Dobrich finished with 15 and 13 assists, respectively, while Smith and Samantha Espy each tallied 11 digs.

How it Happened
With the first set tied at seven-all, kills by Scott and Busa helped put the Phoenix in front, 10-7. Kills by Klein, Terry and Busa helped Elon to a four-point lead, 15-11, before the Bulldogs rallied to take an 18-17 edge. After a maroon and gold timeout, a Klein kill sparked a span of eight straight points to close out the set and give Elon a 25-18 win.

Kills and a block by both Klein and Terry put the maroon and gold ahead by four, 10-6, in the second set. Kills by Busa helped the Phoenix maintain the four-point advantage as a Klein ace extended the lead to five, 19-14. The Citadel pulled within two, 19-17, but a block by Terry and Klein and another by Scott and Karle assisted in a 6-1 run to finish out the set as a Terry kill made it another 25-18 final for the Phoenix.

After a Klein ace made it 9-5 Elon in the third set, two kills by Terry and one by Scott made it a six-point lead, 13-7. The Phoenix maintained control, using back-to-back aces by Maner and a Busa kill to move ahead by nine, 18-9. The Bulldogs were not able to overcome the disadvantage as kills by Terry and Busa gave the maroon and gold a 25-16 win and the match sweep.

Notes
This match marked the 16th all-time meeting between the two programs…Elon leads the series 16-0.
