College Men’s Golf Results – Guilford Fourth After 18 Holes at NCAA D3 Preview

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – Kendall Dunn and Josh Hill both shot one-under-par 71 and helped Guilford College to fourth place after 18 holes of the NCAA DIII Fall Preview Tournament.

The event gives teams the chance to play the courses slated to host the 2017 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships. Sunday’s round was played on the par-72, 6,900-yard Las Colinas Course at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort.

Wittenberg University’s Issah Hartley blistered the track with a five-under 67 that helped the Tigers to a one-shot lead over Huntingdon College in the team standings. Wittenberg put three scorers in the top-eight for an opening-round 281, followed by Huntingdon’s 282. Emory University is third at 287, followed by Guilford’s 290 in the 18-team field.

Hartley shares first place with Huntingdon’s Will Thrash in the 92-man field. Hartley knocked in an eagle-three on the par-five 12th hole, part of his five-under on the back nine holes. Thrash drained a round-best six birdies.
Guilford’s Dunn, a senior, was three-under after his first eight holes thanks to birdies on two of the course’s four par-five holes. He bogeyed the next two holes and the par-three 11th before hitting a birdie putt on the par-five 12th hole to get back to one under. He shares eighth place with his teammate Hill, who knocked in his third birdie of the round on his final hole to notch a 71. He parred 14 of the remaining holes with his lone hiccup, a double-bogey six on the eighth hole.

Freshman Kell Graham fired an even-par 72 and owns a share of 14th place after his first round as a member of the Quakers’ team. (Graham played as an individual in an earlier event). Classmate Zach Evens carded a 76 and junior Harrison Frye shot 78 Sunday.

Coach Justin Tereshko’s Quakers, ranked 19th in the Bushnell Golfweek Preseason NCAA Division III Coaches’ Poll, continue Monday in the 54-hole tournament that concludes Tuesday.
