College Volleyball Final – Guilford 3, Randolph 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Casey Davis had 17 kills and Michaela Allred added 11 in Guilford College’s 3-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) volleyball win Wednesday night.

The Quakers (6-6, 2-1 ODAC) overcame a 25-23 loss in the opening game to take the next three, 29-27, 25-19, 25-20. Randolph slips to 2-10 (0-3 ODAC) with the loss.

Autumn Troxell put away six of her match-high 18 kills in the opening game to help the WildCats pull out a narrow victory. The game featured eight of the contest’s 12 lead changes. Brooks Gillerlain set up 14 assists and added two kills in what proved Randolph’s best effort of the night.

The Quakers answered in the second game and pulled away for a 24-19 advantage before Randolph reeled off five straight points to tie the game at 24-24. Both teams served for the game, but the Quakers took advantage of two late Randolph hitting errors, which set up Christian Ritter’s game-clinching ace to even the match at 1-1.

Guilford rode the momentum into the third game and scored the first four points. The Quakers eventually opened an eight-point lead before settling for the 25-19 win. Guilford hit .353 as a team and got four kills apiece from Davis and Morgan Tompkins. Tina Eucker had 13 of her 36 assists in the set and Sydney Stilwell contributed six of her 10 digs.

A 5-0 Quakers’ run to start the fourth game set the tone for the final set. Ritter served up two of her four aces in the spurt. Randolph rallied late, twice pulling within two points before an Alex Mariona service ace made it a 20-19 Guilford lead. A Davis kill returned serve to the home team with a 21-19 edge and Guilford finished the match on back-to-back kills by Allred and Davis.

Eucker enjoyed a solid all-around night with four kills, three aces, 11 digs and a block in addition to 36 assists. Tompkins added eight putaways to the attack. Ritter finished with a match-best 25 digs and Davis added 15 pickups and three blocks.

Troxell’s 19 kills on .189 hitting led all students. Gillerlain set up 38 assists and had 12 digs. Rebecca Lesnak had 10 kills, but also nine errors, along with 10 digs for Randolph. Mariona had eight kills and three blocks.

Guilford closes a five-match homestand Saturday (9/24) versus visiting league-rival Shenandoah University at noon.
