College Men’s Soccer Final – Greensboro 1, Guilford 0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College’s Sisay Sendek netted the contest’s only goal as Guilford College dropped a Saturday afternoon contest to cross-town rival Greensboro, 1-0, at Greensboro College’s Pride Field.

Greensboro opened the contest with the contest’s first five shots in the first 20 minutes of the contest. Ian Skarring produced one of the Quakers’ two offensive opportunities in the first half, firing a shot stopped by Greensboro’s Jayme Payamps. The Pride only mustered three more shots in the period as only two shots were on target.

The Pride opened the second half a four-shot barrage in the first 11 minutes of the period, but none were on target with one shot being blocked. Eric Hayes (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) protected the Quakers in the middle of the period, making two saves in one minute in the 61st minute to keep the Quakers in the contest. Greensboro increased the pace and eventually broke the ice when Warren Washington and Miguel Parra fed Sendek in the 81st minute. The Quakers produced one more shot in the closing minutes, but the Pride held tight to secure the narrow victory.

Greensboro out-shot Guilford, 25-4, and held a slight edge on corner kicks, 6-4, after the Quakers held a 3-2 advantage in the first half.

Hayes (5-4) made seven saves in net for the Quakers. Payamps stopped three shots in the shutout effort for Greensboro.

The Quakers (5-4) return home Wednesday to begin Old Dominion Athletic Conference play, hosting Lynchburg College for a 7 p.m. contest.
