College Volleyball Final – Guilford 3, Shenandoah 0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Casey Davis (Thomasville, N.C./Trinity) had a match-high 14 kills and 13 digs in Guilford College’s 3-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) volleyball victory over visiting Shenandoah University Saturday. The Quakers (7-6, 3-1 ODAC) prevailed, 25-19, 25-23, 25-23, for their first three-game league winning streak since 2010.

The Quakers took advantage of 10 Hornets’ hitting errors in the opening set and got four putaways from Davis in a 25-19 win that featured six ties and four lead changes. The contest was tied at 13-13 before Guilford closed the game out on a 12-6 run. Christian Ritter (Asheboro, N.C./Eastern Randolph) had five of her nine digs in the opening game for Guilford.

Davis had five putaways and hit .444 in a narrow second-game victory. The Quakers hit .308 as a team in the set, which helped them open a 16-12 lead before Shenandoah (7-8, 1-3 ODAC) battled back to tie the score at 17-17 on one of Elizabeth Lamont’s team-high eight kills on the day. Another Lamont putaway gave the guests a 21-19 edge, but the Quakers rallied to close on a 6-2 run, capped by the second of Davis’ two game-clinching kills. Shenandoah’s Caylin Harris had five of her team-high eight kills and Jasmine Callahan had 10 of her 18 assists in the game.

The Quakers overcame seven service errors in the third game. Davis had five kills and Morgan Tompkins added three in the game, which saw Guilford open a 17-11 lead before Shenandoah rallied. Nicole Shannon’s ace started a 5-0 Shenandoah run that tied the score at 23-23 before a Hornets’ service error followed by a hitting error gave Guilford the sweep.

Davis accounted for 15.5 of Guilford’s points and notched her team-leading ninth double-double of the season. Tompkins added six kills, as did fellow freshman Michaela Allred (Yadkinville, N.C./Forbush), who hit .556 for the match and added two blocks. Tina Eucker set up a match-best 30 assists, picked up six digs and served up an ace. The Quakers hit .213 as a team, their third-best single-game hitting percentage of the season.

Lamont added a team-high 12 digs, plus three assists and two service aces for Shenandoah. Callahan and Rachel Cerretani combined for 33 assists. Nicole Shannon shared team-high digs honors with 12.
