Elon Men’s Tennis Completes Day Two of Elon Fall Invitational

ELON, N.C. – Salvador Mijares remained unbeaten in singles play and advanced to the finals of the A1 Singles draw as the Elon University men’s tennis team completed its second day of play at the Elon Fall Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

HIGHLIGHTS
Mijares won two matches on the day to improve to 3-0 in singles action. The sophomore first defeated UNC Asheville’s Henry Patten 6-3, 7-6(4) in the quarterfinals and then topped Old Dominion’s Jacob Nicolussi in three sets to earn a spot in the finals of the A1 Singles draw.

Petar Tomic advanced to the quarterfinals of the A2 Singles flight, where he was defeated 6-4, 6-2 by Luiz Faria of Coastal Carolina. Tomic is now 1-1 in singles play and 2-2 overall.

Taylor Foote went 1-1 on the day in the C1 Singles flight. The sophomore defeated Reid Dillon of UNC Asheville 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals before dropping a 6-3, 7-6(4) decision to Coastal Carolina’s Jose Ortega in the semifinals. Foote is a combined 3-2 through two days of play.

Neal Port and Felipe Osses-Konig each split a pair of singles matches on day two. Port advanced to the consolation semifinals of the B1 Singles draw with a 6-2, 6-3 victory, but fell in three sets to Longwood’s Julian Farthing.

Competing in the A2 Singles draw, Osses-Konig won a 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 match against Longwood’s Arthur Bardellotto before dropping his second match to Diego Castano of Liberty.

Port and Osses-Konig both are a combined 2-3 through two days of play.

UP NEXT
The Phoenix returns for its third and final day of play at the Elon Fall Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 25.

Mijares and Winthrop’s Diego Quiroz will play for the title of the A1 Singles draw at 11 a.m.

In doubles play, Port and Osses-Konig will play for the B2 Doubles title against James Madison’s Salinas/Roberts at 9 a.m.

Mijares and Foote are set to face Longwood’s Blasco/Bardellotte in the A2 Doubles third-place match at 9:30 a.m., while Tomic and Chris Humphreys will play UNC Greensboro’s Thompson/Vidgren at 10 a.m. in the A1 Doubles consolation finals.
