College Volleyball Final – Guilford 3, Salem 2

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Casey Davis had a match-high 18 kills and teammate Jessica Sheek added 15 in Guilford College’s 3-2 volleyball win over visiting Salem College Wednesday night.

The Quakers (8-9) bounced back from a 25-18 loss in the first set and won the next two frames, 25-23 and 25-19. The Spirits raced to a 10-0 lead and won game four, 25-20, before Guilford pulled away late for a 15-11 triumph in the decisive game. The match featured 16 ties and 10 lead changes.

With the score tied at 9-9 in the fifth game, Guilford scored three straight points off of Salem errors. The lead swelled to 14-9 on consecutive kills by Christina Seaks and Davis. After two Salem points thanks to a Bernisha Master kill followed by a block assist, Davis clinched the match with her 18th kill off an assist by setter Christina Eucker.

Eucker had a match-best 49 assists, plus 11 digs and a service ace. Sheek hit .345 in the middle and had two blocks. Morgan Tompkins chipped in 10 kills and Seaks added eight. Christian Ritter’s 24 digs paced the defense.
Madelyn Chappell’s 17 kills paced the Spirits attack. She had no errors in 38 attempts for a .448 hitting percentage. Kylie Taffer added 14 putaways, plus four blocks. Taylor Moulton had 11 kills and 23 digs for Salem. Setter Hannah Delcamp added 44 assists, a match-best five aces and 16 digs. Libero Mariah Sharon led the defense with a match-best 26 digs.

Coach Emily Gann’s Quakers head to Old Dominion Athletic Conference-rival Washington and Lee University Saturday (10/8) for a match with the Generals and with Frostburg State University.
