Hofstra Takes Win Over Elon Phoenix Volleyball

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Elon volleyball team finished out a four-match road swing today, Oct. 9, after dropping a 3-0 (18-25, 17-25, 20-25) match at Hofstra in the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.

The Phoenix (15-7, 2-4) was led by 10 kills by Sydney Busa and another eight kills from Kam Terry. Sydel Curry tallied 21 assists, while Maddie Jaudon posted 14 digs and two aces in the match.

The Pride (15-5, 5-2) saw a double-double from Laura Masciullo after a match-high 14 kills from and 13 digs. Hannah Klemm led all players with 25 assists, while Luisa Domingues recorded 15 digs.

How it Happened
Kills by Busa and Terry helped the Phoenix to a 5-3 lead early in the first set as kills by Ebony Scott kept Elon in front, 9-8. The Pride responded to take the edge, 14-13, and continued with a 6-1 run to move ahead, 20-14. Elon closed the gap to four, 20-16, after a Busa kill and a block by Busa and Ally Karle but Hofstra would go on to win the set, 25-18.

The Pride jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the second set, forcing an early Phoenix timeout. Kills by Busa and Terry and aces by Jaudon and Kayla Agae kept Elon within five, 14-9, but the maroon and gold was not able to overcome the deficit as HU claimed a 25-17 final.

Kills by Busa and Karle got the Phoenix off to a two-point advantage, 7-5, in the third set before Hofstra claimed the lead, 8-7. The maroon and gold would remain within one and even the score three times by the time the set reached 10-all. The Pride moved ahead by four, 15-11, as an Agae kill and Jaudon ace kept the Phoenix within two, 15-13. Elon continued to chip away at Hofstra’s lead, using kills by Agae, a block by Klein and another Jaudon ace to take the advantage, 18-17. The Pride responded to move back in front and take the final set, 25-20.
