HPU Women’s Golf Panthers ride hot second round in Pinehurst

• High Point shot a second round 298 to climb a pair of spots on the leaderboard
• Senior Danielle Fuss is t-19th with a 36-hole score of 147 (+3)
• Freshman Samantha Vodry is t-26th and made four birdies in her second round

PINEHURST, N.C. – Behind a solid afternoon on the historic No. 1 Course, the High Point University women’s golf team climbed two spots on the leaderboard in second round action Monday at the Pinehurst Challenge.

HPU shot an opening round 306 (+18) to sit tied for 16th after 18 holes, but rode a much improved 298 (+10) in round two to move into 14th after 36 (604).

“I’m proud of the way the girls handled themselves today against a very stacked field,” head coach Alexis Bennett said. “I gain more and more confidence in this group with each event and I firmly believe our best golf is ahead of us.”

The Panthers have a pair of golfers in the top-26, led by senior Danielle Fuss. The Rochester, N.Y., native carded six birdies on the day and sits t-19th after consistent rounds of 74 and 73 (147, +3). She is tied for third amongst the field in par-5 scoring (-4).

Freshman Samantha Vodry is tied for 26th after firing a strong 36-hole total of 148 (75-73). The showing included a second-round 73, which marks the best 18-hole score of her young HPU career. In that excellent afternoon session, Vodry made three birdies on her back nine and four overall to propel her way to the good finish. She is tied for fourth in the field in total pars (25).

Fellow freshman Tonrak Tasaso registered matching scores of 75 in her two rounds to card a 36-hole cumulative of 150. Tasaso made five birdies on the day, including three in her second round, and is tied for 37th overall.

Wrapping up the Panther contingent, junior Cayla Smith is tied for 86th with a 36-hole mark of 159. Smith opened with an 82, but shot a much improved 77 in her afternoon round to ascend five spots on the leaderboard.

East Carolina leads the event with a two-round total of 572 (-4), followed by Auburn (+6), Samford (+7), Wichita State (+9) and Kennesaw State (+15).

The Panthers wrap up the Pinehurst Challenge Tuesday with 18 holes beginning at 8:30 a.m.
