CHARLESTON, S.C. – The High Point University women’s soccer team went on the road to pick up a 3-1 win at Charleston Southern on Saturday afternoon in Charleston, S.C. Junior Alex Hank became the Panthers’ Div. I leader in career wins with the 23rd of her career.
“I am very proud of the team,” head coach Marty Beall said. “This is a great result on the road at a very difficult place to play. Credit goes to Charleston Southern’s goalkeeper who made some fantastic saves. I am very pleased with the way the team created numerous chances throughout the afternoon, got three goals and walked away with all three points.”
Hank played the first 82 minutes and made two saves to earn her seventh win of the season. With the victory, the junior passes former Panther Andrea Ritchie for the most career wins in the HPU Div. I record book.
High Point improves to 8-5-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the Big South with the road win. Charleston Southern drops below .500 with a 6-7-0 overall record and a 2-3-0 mark in conference play.
The Panthers got on the board with their first goal of the afternoon in the 26th minute when Bri Jean-Charles took a pass in the box from junior Becca Rolfe and muscled off two defenders before beating the keeper for her third goal of the season.
High Point doubled its lead less than seven minutes later when junior Michele Micciche tallied her second goal of the season to put HPU in front, 2-0. Rolfe picked up her second assist of the day with a flip-throw into the box that Micciche was able to control and finish for the score.
The lead remained 2-0 until early in the second half when redshirt-junior Bailey Beattie found the back of the net in the 58th minute for her fourth goal of the season. Beattie was taken down in the box, drawing a penalty kick. The forward stepped to the spot and converted for her second PK goal of the season.
Charleston Southern threw numbers forward late in the contest and were able to find a goal in the 85th minute when Anna Sells scored her eighth goal of the season after a scramble in the box.
High Point dominated possesion throughout and had a 22-5 edge in shots with 15 minutes to go, including a 14-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Buccaneers outshot HPU down the stretch, but the Panthers still outshot CSU, 23-9 overall and 15-4 on goal.
High Point wraps up its home schedule with its next game as the Panthers return to Vert Stadium to host Presbyterian College on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. HPU’s seniors will be honored in a ceremony before the games.
