Pride Complete Weekend Sweep With Victory Over Lions

DEMORAST, Ga – The Greensboro College men’s soccer team completed a weekend sweep of USA South competition Saturday by defeating Piedmont College,2-1.

The Pride (9-5, 6-2 USA South) were able to continue from yesterday’s performance, when Sisay Sendek scored in the 25th minute from a Jared Heller assist, giving Greensboro a one-goal.

The Pride then held the one-goal advantage heading into the halftime break.

Carlos Barragan then extended the lead early in the second half with an unassisted goal.Barragan’s goal marked his third goal of the weekend and his eighth of the season.

The Pride would let in a late goal to the Lions, but were able to keep them from scoring the equalizer.

With the win, Jaime Payamps earned his ninth win of the season, making four saves. Barragan recorded a team-high three shots, while Ryan Mule, Aameen Goyal, and Geradro Peraza added two shots each.

“It was good to get two wins out of the weekend,” Head Coach Tony Falvino said, “It will be good to get back to Pride Field and improve through this week of practice.”

Pride Women Suffer 2-1 Setback At Averett

DANVILLE, Va. – The Greensboro College women’s soccer team fell to Averett University Saturday, 2-1.

The Cougars struck for the game’s first goal in the 14th minute when Annalie Jobsis placed her shot in the upper left corner of the goal.

Averett then struck for its final goal of the game in the 43rd minute to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

However, the Pride cut the deficit in half after Devin D’Agostin took a feed from Caitlyn Cook and beat the Cougars keeper.

Greensboro had several more opportunities late but could not find the equalizer, falling by the one goal margin.

The Pride outshot the Cougars 19-13. Lauren Greeson had a team-high four shots on goal, while Anna Rae Porcelli, Mercedes Fisher, Briana Huber, and D’Agostin each had one shot on goal.

Brittany Morrison recorded three saves in the loss.

“This was a tough one for us today,” Head Coach Gus Mota said. “We gave up two goals on two mental mistakes and didn’t finish our opportunities.

“This late in the year, the girls have to find the will to finish in the attacking third.”

Football Drops USA South Contest Against Averett

DANVILLE, Va. – The Greensboro College football team fell to Averett University Saturday, 52-6.

The Cougars (3-2, 2-0 USA South) took an early 7-0 lead after returning the opening kickoff 89 yards.

Just three minutes later, Greensboro got on the board following a eight-yard touchdown pass from Quentin Chavis to Devon Newton. However, the extra point was blocked, leaving the Pride trailing 7-6.

Averett then scored the game’s next 45 points to secure the victory.

Chavis completed nine passes for 112 yards, including one touchdown. Newton finished with 59 yards receiving on two catches, while Demario Smith had 30 yards receiving.

Meleck Thorton paced the run game with 62 yards rushing on 16 carries.

Keon Reynolds finished with nine tackles to lead the Greensboro defense, while Herbert Bridges, Trey Cronin, and Garratt Brannock each had eight tackles.

Ryan Campbell averaged just under 43 yards per punt, with a long of 58.

“This was a disappointing loss for our guys,” Head Coach Greg Crum said. “Our kids fought to the end, but we had too many missed tackles and miscues on special teams.

“We will get back to practice next week and look to get better for our homecoming.”
