Elon Women’s Soccer Falls to Delaware on Senior Day

ELON, N.C. – Despite creating more chances in the match, the Elon University women’s soccer team fell to the Delaware Blue Hens, 2-0, on Senior Day Sunday afternoon, Oct. 16, at Rudd Field.

Before the match, the Phoenix honored its eight-member 2016 senior class of Bria Bass, Alexis de Groot, Kara DeGuisto, Rachel Hallman, Sarah Henson, Taylor Mohr, Kelly Siewers and Erin Tanhauser.

The Phoenix outshot the Blue Hens 14-4 in the match, including 11-1 in the second half, but they couldn’t score after 90 minutes. Elon falls to 7-8-2 overall and 2-4-1 in CAA play. Delaware improves to 4-13 overall and 3-5 in conference action.

HIGHLIGHTS
Dani Kabat came off the bench to put the Blue Hens ahead in the 33rd minute. Nikki Adams passed it to Kabat, who finished from 18-yards out into the top left corner.

The Phoenix responded in the 36th minute with shots from Olivia Lucia and Laura Mitchell, however their shots were blocked and saved respectively. The Blue hens held the 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard after 45 minutes and the shot count was even at 3-3 at the break.

After falling behind in the first half, Tori Baliatico created Elon’s first chance of the half in the 48th minute. She beat a defender and missed the goal just left. She followed up with another chance in the 54th minute, but her attempt was blocked.

Elon would get off three more shots in the next 10 minutes and were denied by Delaware. After Susannah Anderson’s shot in the 64th minute, the Blue Hens countered and Madison Brosler capitalized, lobbing Elon goalkeeper Katelyn Fowler to extend Delaware’s lead, 2-0.

The Phoenix were able to muster six more shots in the final minutes, but couldn’t get on the scoresheet as Delaware held on for the 2-0 win.

NOTES
– The Phoenix falls to ninth in the CAA Standings after the loss. However, Elon is only three points out of sixth place entering the final weekend of conference play.
– Two wins next weekend would put the Phoenix at 13 points. Currently the top four teams in the league have 15 (Northeastern, JMU) 14 (Drexel), and 12 (William & Mary) points respectively.
– The top six teams in the league make the conference tournament.
