Elon’s Leavitt Shares Title, Men’s Golf Takes Third at Phoenix Invitational

BURLINGTON, N.C. – Jake Leavitt finished tied for first individually and the Phoenix finished third, as the Elon University men’s golf team completed play at the second-annual Elon Phoenix Invitational today, Oct. 18, at Alamance Country Club.

Leavitt shared the individual title with George Mason’s Eric Edwards and North Carolina’s Jose Montano at 10-under par. The individual title is Leavitt’s first of his career.

“I want to congratulate Jake Leavitt for winning the golf tournament individually. It’s been a long time coming for him,” Elon head coach Don Hill said. “I’ve challenged the guys a lot in the last month. We’ve played a tough schedule to start the year and we did that to make ourselves better. This is just one golf tournament but I think we’ve started to realize that we can be pretty good.”

Gardner-Webb won the team title at 22-under par (277-281-272–830) while Elon finished one shot back of second place at 3-under par (283-282-284–849) after shooting even par in the final round.

HIGHLIGHTS
Leavitt closed with a 1-under par round of 70 on the final day. The junior carded rounds of 67 and 66 in the first two rounds and finished tied with two other players in first place at 10-under par.

Philip Loeb continued his solid play, earning a 12th place finish at 4-under par. The sophomore posted rounds of 70, 68 and 71 for a collective total of 209.

Charlie May and William Harwood each shot 1-under par rounds of 70 in their final 18 holes. May finished tied for 23rd at 1-under par and Harwood finished tied for 26th at even par.

Finishing out Elon’s team score were Jared Mactas and Dex Blank, who finished tied for 32ndand 88th, respectively.

William Ronnholm, Steven Segrist and William Knibbs posted individual rounds for the Phoenix. Ronnholm was the highest finisher of the trio, shooting 74 in the final round to finish tied for 46th.

Segrist finished tied for 67th and Knibbs tied for 73rd.

NOTES
-Jake Leavitt’s first-place finish marks the best finish of his career. The junior’s previous best finish was a tie for fifth at the Maryland Terrapin Invitational in the 2014-15 season.

-Leavitt’s first two rounds of 67 and 66 bested his previous career low of 68.

-Elon’s third-place finish marked its best team result since a second-place finish at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate in March.
