GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College volleyball team picked up a home USA South Athletic Conference victory over Methodist University Thursday, 3-0.

In addition to the victory, the Pride volleyball team hosted its annual Volley for a Cure match to bring awareness to cancer, while raising funds for cancer research.

“Tonight was a bigger purpose than just volleyball,” Head Coach Kaci Pike said. “In addition to the match, we are able to show our support for everyone that has been affected in one way or the other by cancer, while also raising funds for cancer research.”

Greensboro (17-9, 8-5 USA South) established an early four-point edge in Set 1 following two kills by Evan Sherer.

Methodist (7-19, 3-8 USA South) was then able to even the set at 17, but Greensboro used a 5-1 run to pull in front 22-18 before taking a 1-0 lead with a 25-22 win. Sherer sparked the run with a big kill, while Darrian Bolt capped it off with her first service ace of the match.

The Monarchs then came out strong in Set 2, taking a 7-4 lead before Greensboro answered back with a 4-0 run to regain the lead. Following a Sherer kill, Samantha Kirscher and Shayla Moss closed out the run with a key block.

Greensboro then used its momentum to win the set 25-17 before closing out the match with a 25-20 in Set 3.

“Tonight was a big win for our team as our defense did a good job staying aggressive,” Pike added. “We are looking forward to finishing our conference play strong.”

Emily Horn and Meredith Summers had a team-high nine kills, while Sherer finished with eight kills. Katie Clark and Bolt combined for 32 assists, while Tori Belcher paced the Greensboro defense with 16 digs.

The Pride volleyball team will step outside conference play Saturday when they travel to take on Hollins University and Virginia Wesleyan College in Roanoke, Va. For more information on Greensboro College Volleyball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
