1A/2A Girls’ Golf Championship: Clinton’s Wooten and West Davidson capture 2016 titles at Foxfire

FOXFIRE VILLAGE, N.C. – Clinton’s Amy Wooten used a 1-over par second round to secure her name at the top of the leaderboard at even-par in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s 2016 1A/2A State Championship at Foxfire Resort’s Grey Fox Course. She is the first individual state champion from Clinton in the 36-year history of the Women’s Golf Championship.

Wooten had a stellar front-nine on day two, carding three birdies and a single bogey to push her total to 3-under on the tournament, but gave back three strokes on the back-nine on her way to an even-par, 144 tournament finish. Wooten finished 13 shots clear of her nearest competitor, outpacing Stuart Cramer’s Ellie Porman.

Porman, last year’s individual runner-up, finished in second individually at 13-over par, 157. Her 3-over par 75 in round two was the third-lowest single round score of the tournament, behind only the two rounds fired by Wooten.

West Davidson ran away with the team competition, as the Dragons blew away the field thanks to Rachel Mast’s third place finish and Olivia Sharpe’s pair of sub-90 rounds. Mast shot 14-over par, 158 for the tournament, including a 4-over par 76 on day one. Sharpe finished the tournament 26-over par, with a 10-over 82 on day two of the event. The Dragons were the only team to have two players both under 90 in each round.

Franklin Academy finished in second in the team event at 576 and 144-over par for the tournament. Sara Allen led the Patriots with a score of 40-over par, 184 over two days, good enough for 22nd place.

Gray Stone Day finished in third place with Lauren Denhard leading the way for the team. Denhard posted a 46-over par 190 for her two day total, finishing in a tie for 29th place overall individually. Teammate Grasyn Waisner added a 33rd place finish at 50-over par 194.

Team scores are compiled based on the three lowest individual scores from a five player team.
