ROCK HILL, S.C. – The High Point University women’s soccer team claimed its third Big South Regular Season Championship with a 1-0 win at Winthrop in the regular season finale on Tuesday night in Rock Hill, S.C.

“I am so excited for this team,” head coach Marty Beall said. “We worked very hard all season and played a very challenging non-conference schedule that prepared us for the Big South. They have earned this championship and I couldn’t be more proud of them or happy that they get to experience this.”

High Point finishes the regular season with an 11-5-2 overall record and a 7-1-1 record in the Big South. Winthrop ends the season with a 4-12-0 record overall and a 1-7-1 record in the conference.

The contest remained scoreless until the 63rd minute when junior Bri Jean-Charles scored her fourth goal of the season to put HPU in front, 1-0. The Panthers broke out on a counter attack and redshirt-senior Kelsey Perrell found Jean-Charles racing up the right side. The forward got to the top of the box and tucked a shot into the lower right corner for the goal.

HPU dominated possession throughout the night, putting up 19 shots compared to just four for the Eagles. Junior Alex Hank made three saves to earn her 10th win of the season, improving to 10-5-2 overall with her eighth shutout of the season.

The regular season title is the Panthers’ third overall and their first since 2012.

High Point will host the eighth-seeded Charleston Southern Buccaneers in the Big South Quarterfinals on Sunday, Oct. 30, at Vert Stadium at 2 p.m. The Panthers beat Charleston Southern, 3-1, on the road earlier this season behind goals from Jean-Charles, redshirt-junior Bailey Beattie and junior Michele Micciche.
