College Volleyball Final – Guilford 3, Emory & Henry 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Morgan Tompkins tallied a double-double with 11 kills and 23 digs as the Quakers claimed a Saturday evening Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Emory & Henry College, 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-22).

The Quakers (12-13, 6-5 ODAC) featured three hitters with 11 kills a piece with Tompkins leading those hitters with a .179 hit percentage. Christian Ritter (Asheboro, N.C./Eastern Randolph) also tallied a double-double with 20 digs to add to her 11 kills while Casey Davis (Thomasville, N.C./Trinity) added 11 digs to her 11 kills. Setter Tina Eucker tallied 41 assists with five kills, five service aces, and a .455 hit percentage. Jessica Sheek collected nine kills and hit .429 for the match.

Emory & Henry (15-12, 6-5 ODAC) hit .359 in set one with only two attack errors in a set where both sides remained even though the first portion of the set. The Wasps’ lead by three points three times in the set before claiming the final points to win the first set by five.

The Wasps opened the second set with a 7-1 advantage, but the Quakers countered with a 9-1 rally to grab the advantage. Guilford extended their lead to four, 15-11, and pushed the lead back to four, 19-14, later in the set. The Quakers shook off a 5-1 Emory & Henry rally late in the set as Guilford produced a five-point rally to close the set. Guilford held the Wasps to a .079 hit percentage in the third set as Emory & Henry jumped to a 5-0 lead early in the set. Guilford climbed back ahead with a 9-1 rally and never relinquished the lead in the frame. Emory & Henry held the Quakers to a .083 hit percentage in the final set while the Wasps hit .153. However, the Quakers amassed a lead as large as six points in the set on the way to victory.

The Quakers hit .166 for the match while the Wasps hit .210. Emory & Henry amassed 12 service errors compared to just four for Guilford. The Quakers boasted four players with double-digit digs as Guilford out-dug the Wasps, 78-60. Emory & Henry held a 6-0 advantage on blocks.

Kennady Thomason and Ali Singleton led the Wasps with 12 kills a piece while Emily Hinshaw totaled a game-high 24 digs.

Winning tie-breakers with the Wasps and Virginia Wesleyan College, the Quakers earn the fifth seed and will travel to fourth-seeded Bridgewater College Wednesday for the ODAC Quarterfinals.
