Elon Volleyball Drops Match to Blue Hens

ELON, N.C. – The Elon volleyball team hosted its annual Pink Match for breast cancer awareness today, Oct. 30, but was not able to pull out the win, falling to Delaware, 3-1 (19-25, 25-23, 18-25, 21-25), in Alumni Gym.

Sydel Curry posted her 13th double-double of the year for the Phoenix (16-12, 3-9) after 44 assists and 11 digs. Kam Terry tallied a team-high 12 kills followed by 10 kills from Michelle Klein. Maddie Jaudon led the maroon and gold defense with 16 digs and got another 11 digs from Kayla Agae, while Curry posted a team-high three blocks.

The Blue Hens (11-14, 5-7) saw 16 kills from both Alexa Swann and Maria Bellinger as Swann hit .600 in the match. Erin Layne tallied a double-double with 50 assists and 14 digs, while Autumn Jenkins finished with a match-high 18 digs.

How it happened
Kills by Terry and Ally Karle got the Phoenix off to a quick 4-1 start in the first set before the score became tied at eight-all. With the set still even, 10-all, the Blue Hens managed six straight to take a 16-10 advantage. Elon would later close the gap to just three, 22-19, after a 3-0 run off kills by Sydney Busa, Klein and Terry. UD claimed the final three points to take the set, 25-19.

With Delaware leading the second set, 8-4, the maroon and gold used kills by Karle, Busa and Terry and a block by Terry and Karle for a 6-0 run to take the lead, 10-8. From there the set saw eight ties by the time the score reached 18-all. A kill by Curry helped the Phoenix pull in front by two, 20-18, and reach set point, 24-20. The Blue Hens cut its deficit to one, 24-23, before a Busa kill won the set for Elon, 25-23, to even the match.

Elon was forced to take an early timeout in the third set after UD took an early 6-2 edge. The Blue Hens extended its advantage to as much as 10, 19-9, before an Agae ace capped a 7-3 run by the maroon and gold to move within six, 22-16. However, Delaware held on to win the set, 25-18.

The fourth set saw five ties by the time the score reached 13-all. The Blue Hens took the lead from there, 18-14, before a kill by Agae and a Jaudon ace pulled the Phoenix within two, 19-17. That was as close as the maroon and gold would get in the end as UD took a 25-21 victory to win the match.
