Elon Phoenix Volleyball Halts Eagles for Match Sweep

ELON, N.C. – The Elon volleyball team started off the month on a strong note with 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-17) win over North Carolina Central tonight, Nov. 1, in Alumni Gym.

Sydney Busa tallied her ninth double-double of the season for the Phoenix (17-12) after a four-set career-high 19 kills (6.3/set) off 32 assists and only five errors to hit .438 and 10 digs. Ebony Scott recorded eight kills off 13 attempts with only one error to hit .538. Sydel Curry finished with 35 assists (11.6/set), while Maddie Jaudon and Kayla Agae led the defense with 12 digs each.

The Eagles (5-14) saw eight kills from Whitney White and 22 assists and nine digs from Paige Phillips, while Jazmine Daye posted three total blocks.

How it Happened
NCCU claimed the advantage at the beginning of the first set, 9-7, forcing an Elon timeout. With the Phoenix trailing by one, 17-16, the team used an 8-2 run that was capped by four straight Busa kills to take a 24-19 lead. Another kill by Busa, her 12th of the set, sealed the 25-20 win for the maroon and gold.

A block by Busa and Ally Karle, a Busa kill and a Curry ace gave Elon a 4-0 lead to start the second set. A kill by Scott extended the advantage to six, 10-4, before the Phoenix took as much as a 12-point lead, 18-6. The maroon and gold continued its run and used a Scott kill to win the set, 25-13.

The Eagles grabbed a 4-0 lead at the beginning of the third set before kills by Klein, Busa and a Jaudon ace even the score at six-all. From there, the Phoenix used a 7-3 run that was capped by a Nori Thomas kill to move ahead, 13-9. A kill by Scott extended the lead to six, 20-14, as a Busa kill closed out the set, 25-17.

Notes
Elon leads the all-time series against NCCU, 22-5…This marks the fourth time in the last six meetings that the Phoenix has swept the Eagles…Elon has won the last 16 straight.
